In the early 60s, Joe Wong signed a business opportunity to open an unlicensed restaurant in Churchgate above two retail shops. Seven years later he acquired the present premises at Bedford Square and obtained a licence for the Hong Kong Fountain Restaurant. With 100 covers; a raised platform with an electronic organ for dancing; crescent shaped seating in the alcoves with circular tables; excellent cuisine and service; Hong Kong Fountain was the most popular night spot in the town.
When Joe retired the lease passed to the Chan brothers, assuming the eponymous title, Mr Chan’s Restaurant. Eventually the lease passed to big brother Ming and his wife Irene, who are the restaurant’s current owners.
